How Acting Confidence is Built, Not Born
Ask any Australian actor what they struggle with most early in their career, and confidence ranks near the top. Even seasoned professionals hitting big roles like the Winners & Losers actor team will tell you—confidence doesn’t come first. It grows through action.
Whether you’re filming with Netflix calibre crews or auditioning for your first regional production, learning how to harness fear and move through doubt is essential. It’s why at Moore Acting Instinct, we start confidence work from day one.
The Inner Voice Actors Need to Tame
Paul Moore—the Geelong actor known for his performance as Wes Fitzpatrick and creative force behind Rostered On (Netflix)—trains actors to notice the inner monologue. That self-commentary can either fuel great moments or sabotage them with anxiety.
Are you about to read without commitment? Do you apologise before you even start? These are signs your inner critic is louder than your instinct. And instinct, as Paul teaches, is your most valuable tool on screen and stage.
Studio Story: Karen’s First On-Camera Shift
One student—let’s call her Karen—joined our acting classes in Geelong two years ago. Talented, overly self-aware, and visibly nervous, she would fidget or freeze as soon as we rolled camera.
Paul adjusted her prep. Instead of memorising pages or ‘acting’, she was taught to breathe deep, root into her body, and commit to one action. One week later, during a practice scene where she confronted a cheating partner, everything changed. Her voice dropped, her energy shifted, and everyone in the room went still. In just minutes, she showed more power than in weeks of rehearsal.
Confidence didn’t emerge from praise. It came from dropping into truth and taking bold risks safely. That’s the psychology behind Moore Acting Instinct.
Why Confidence Matters More Than ‘Talent’
We love talent. But agents and casting directors aren’t just searching for raw skill — they respond to presence. Grounded confidence keeps nerves in check, allows listening to flow, and makes your performance magnetic.
As Paul Moore (teacher) says, “Acting is not about pretending to be brave. It’s using your fear like fire.” It’s something he built during his transition from a designer to actor, when he became both star and producer on his own shows, redefining what a Paul Moore (actor) career could be.
That blend of fearless creation and mindful technique is what sets Paul apart as Paul Moore the acting coach.
Two Confidence Thieves to Watch For
- Comparison Syndrome: Seeing others succeed and telling yourself you’re falling behind.
- Perfection Paralysis: Believing you must ‘get it right’ before taking a risk. Risk is the job.
Actors of all levels fall into these traps. The best keep moving forward anyway.
Try This Today (5 minutes)
Feel more confident in under five minutes with this on-the-spot exercise:
- Find a quiet space and stand with both feet grounded.
- Take 3 slow, deep breaths. On each out-breath, drop your shoulders.
- Say out loud: “They want to see me, not a version of me.”
- Pick a short line or phrase you know well. Deliver it three different ways: committed, questioning, and angry.
- Notice how each version feels in your body but judge nothing.
- Finish by nodding once and saying, “This was enough for today.”
That last line matters. It sets boundaries with the perfectionist in your head.
Confidence is an Actor’s Lifelong Practice
At Moore Acting Instinct, we make confidence part of every class. Learning to act is also learning to hold your own space under pressure. Whether you’re a working or emerging actor trained by a drama coach or just getting started, that’s where the magic lies.
Some actors wait for the big role or right feedback to feel brave. But confidence isn’t given. It’s built—breath by breath, scene by scene. Just ask the alumni we’ve trained who now book feature films, commercials, or lead whole casts. Confidence isn’t extra. It’s the core skill of being a believable acting teacher, colleague, and artist.
So before your next self-tape or rehearsal, lean into your fear. Use it. Grow with it.
Then go again.
Building your acting confidence is the smartest choice any Australian actor can make—start your journey with Paul Moore the acting coach today.
